Camera Call Out

I repeat, this isn't cool.

If you're into police scanners you're probably familiar with the concept of repeaters because, well, radio stuff.  But that's not the kind of repeater I'm referring to.

In today's Camera Call Out I'm re-capitulating this footage from the Ring Neighbors app to highlight the unusual phenomenon of those porch pirates who keep showing up over and over again on camera.

Like, what's the deal?

The person featured lifting a package off a porch and walking away above has, according to the original poster, been there once before to do the same thing.  But I wouldn't be making a morning topic out of this based on that alone, I've seen a number of people over large swaths of time show up over and over again.  Here's one BuffScan YT video that seems to demonsrate just that.

What's interesting to me among many things in contemplating all of this is how the entire home security/doorbell camera market (the Rings of commerce) must be trying to digest that their conceptual tagline, that their cameras do something to prevent or curb porch piracy, is basically fiction.

The bad actors seem to be very attuned to the reality that the resources aren't there to intercept and stop them, at least from the law enforcement sector.  Thieves make tepid if any attempt to disguise themselves, and, as is the slant here, they'll even become "porch pirate cam celebrities".

There is sort of an air that police don't really want to be involved (in a sense) with directly combating porch pirates.  When they give advice, it's nearly always a piece more about how to have packages safely delivered than it is on the steps to take in order to help cops race after the bad guy.

Of course the problem is complicated, and maybe police shouldn't be spending any time on a direct assault -- I am not sure that that actually is a good idea.

And truth be told, part of me has always wondered what kind of naive optimism must exist that an entire industry somehow built up around leaving expensive consumer goods alone on porches in the first place.  Go figure.

Man Busts Out City Hall Windows - A Grudge?

09/02/2024

Not sure what to make of this but a one Antonio Nunes was arrested after police responded to reports of a man going at all the City Hall building glass he could break.

MSM reports are that he then made threatening remarks toward Mayor Brown.

Nunes was arrested and then released.

A simple search of the accused's name which leads to this account and then this account hints at some sort of grudge involving the Facebook user's niece.

The FB postings seem rationale (assuming they are from the accused, Nunes doesn't seem a loon, necessarily) so it would be interesting to hear the story behind the story.  That leniance of curiosity given, his niece isn't going to be any better off with him being tied up legally over the next few years.

Stabbing Incident at 240 West Ferry

09/23/2023

It's interesting that while I did have my phone active with the BuffScan live feed while commuting home yesterday, I didn't pay much attention to the call out for a stabbing. I did hear "stabbing", but I didn't hear or pay attention to the address of it. Had I, I might have known that I was driving head-first into a crime scene just a block or two from my house.

When I first encountered and posted media of the incident from the scene I had no idea what I was recording. I didn't associate the "stabbing" I had overheard with it (if I remembered it at all) largely, I imagine, because there was so much public safety response here, it seemed like something more dramatic than that.

In any case, yeah, I caught this post-stabbing ground footage of police and medical personnel managing the scene.

The address given in the radio call is technically the address of the Hope Refugee Drop-In Center but as there has been no MSM coverage or any police release yet to explain, I don't know if this is something that happened in the center itself, or was just some street brawl that occurred outside or around it.
